AAC&U officers and staff regularly travel throughout the country, and occasionally the world, to speak and consult at AAC&U member schools through seminars, institutes, and workshops as well as in more informal gatherings. AAC&U staff also regularly speak on the value of liberal education at various media and public affairs events. These meetings are an opportunity for the membership to influence the direction of AAC&U's initiatives. We look forward to seeing you the next time we are on your campus.


AAC&U President Carol Geary Schneider served as a panelist at "The Future of Undergradute Education in the United States," a conference hosted by Columbia University, on April 13. She spoke on the state of undergraduate education in the United States and described AAC&U’s Liberal Education and America’s Promise initiative. President Schneider traveled to Western New England College to deliver a plenary address to a gathering of faculty and community leaders and speak to students about college learning and employer expectations. She also attended a Wingspread gathering hosted by the Work Colleges Consortium, where she spoke on learning outcomes at work colleges and other service-learning institutions.


Alma Clayton-Pedersen, AAC&U vice president for education and institutional renewal, discussed how to handle challenging moments related to diversity in the classroom with the graduate psychology department at Widener University in Chester, Pennsylvania, on April 9. She attended the American Educational Research Association annual meeting April 10–12 in Chicago, Illinois. Clayton-Pedersen presented on issues related to Making Excellence Inclusive(SM) at the Johns Hopkins University “Fixing the Academy” conference in Baltimore, Maryland, April 13–14. She also served on a panel discussing the recent activity of the Spellings Commission during San José State University’s 150th anniversary celebration, which was held May 4–5.


Terrel Rhodes, AAC&U vice president for quality, curriculum, and assessment, conducted an afternoon workshop for the Council on Undergraduate Education and the dean and provost at Gallaudet University on April 18. The workshop focused on reforming general education and reducing the number of credits required for the general education program.
