Interim Report Documents
Lessons Learned from Diversity Initiatives
A new interim report by Daryl Smith
of Claremont Graduate University (CGU) evaluates the progress
of the James Irvine Foundation California Diversity Initiative.
The project, jointly sponsored by AAC&U and CGU and codirected
by AAC&U Vice President Alma Clayton-Pedersen, is working
with twenty-eight independent colleges and universities to
develop effective diversity evaluation tools both to monitor
progress and to bring about organizational change. To learn
more about the project, see the Initiative's
Web pages, the new
interim report (pdf), and issues of AAC&U's
Diversity Digest highlighting project results.
AAC&U
Organizes Bildner New Jersey Campus Diversity Initiative Meeting
AAC&U continues to support the Bildner
New Jersey Campus Diversity Initiative (NJCDI) as it works
to reduce prejudice, to promote intergroup understanding,
and to foster the comprehensive institutional change needed
to support such learning. Most recently, AAC&U collaborated
with The Philanthropic Initiative to organize the third meeting
of NJCDI schools, which was held April 2-3 in Long Branch,
New Jersey. Drawing on the insights and achievements of the
nine participating campuses, the meeting focused on how to
best position each institution to achieve a high level of
change in the final year of the grant. More information about
NJCDI and details about the meeting can be found on AAC&U's
Bildner Initiative Web pages.

Journal on General Education Features Findings from Survey
of AAC&U Members
The latest issue of New
Directions for Higher Education, "Changing General Education
Curriculum," features findings from two surveys of AAC&U member
institutions conducted in 2000. Edited by AAC&U Senior Scholar
Jerry Gaff and by James L. Ratcliff and D. Kent Johnson of
Penn State University, the issue documents significant changes
in attitudes about general education, in factors influencing
curriculum change, and in educational priorities for general
education programs. The main findings of the surveys also
appear in The Status of General Education in the Year
2000, an AAC&U publication. To order a copy of the
journal, visit Jossey-Bass

Participants in AAC&U's Sumner Symposium Exchange Strategies
for Advancing Health
Participants from eleven colleges
and universities attended AAC&U's third Sumner Symposium,
which was held April 26-27 in Washington, DC. The Sumner Symposia
and Sumner National Network explore how the power and capacity
of students--their energy, experience, intelligence, and good
will--can be integrated with other institutional assets to
advance our common health. At the most recent Symposium, teams
of students, faculty, and administrators discussed programs
and strategies that address campus and community health problems.
