Campus-Community Dialogue on Liberal Learning
Held in Maryland

The first Campus-Community Dialogue for the Presidents' Campaign for the Advancement of Liberal Learning (CALL) was held in Largo, MD, on September 26, hosted by Prince George's Community College and the University of Maryland Baltimore County. About 90 people participated, representing local business executives, public schools, local government, and higher education. Participants responded favorably to the proposed integration of liberal and practical outcomes in education. The CALL has more Campus-Community dialogues scheduled throughout the 2002-2003 academic year. These regional roundtable conversations center on topics such as effective student learning, school-college connections, and ways that academic, community, and business leaders can work together to prepare students for lifelong learning and effective work. The next event is scheduled to take place at Trinity College in Hartford, CT, on October 8th, followed by an event in Raleigh on October 10th hosted by Duke University and North Carolina State University. For a schedule of these dialogues and for more information on the CALL, visit www.aacu.org/call/index.cfm.

Global Studies in the Liberal Arts Curriculum Funded by Mellon

AAC&U was recently awarded a research grant by the Andrew Mellon Foundation to investigate how liberal arts colleges are addressing global preparation and democratic engagement for their students. Through their research, including a series of roundtables discussions, staff from AAC&U's Office of Diversity, Equity, and Global Initiatives plan to compile a list of best practices and strategies for global education and democratic engagement.

If your institution is committed to integrating global education into the overall mission of the college as evidenced through curricular and co-curricular initiatives, please contact Michelle Cooper to let her know that you would like to be part this research project.
